Ingredients

  • 1 lb cured pork jowl
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)


Instructions

  1. Pan fry the pork jowl over medium heat until it becomes crispy.
  2. Remove the jowl from the pan and drain any excess grease.
  3. Reduce heat to medium-low, then return the jowl to the pan along with chicken broth, honey, and butter. Stir to combine.
  4. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with water, then add this mixture to the pan. Stir and let simmer for 3-5 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly and coats the pan. Toss the jowl using tongs to ensure it’s fully coated.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix together the soy sauce, vinegar, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes to create the dipping sauce.
  6. Serve the pork jowl warm, accompanied by the dipping sauce on the side.

Notes

For a sweeter sauce, adjust the amount of honey to taste.
The recipe can be made with other meats if desired.
Adjust the level of spice by modifying or omitting the red pepper flakes.
