Description

These French Bread Rolls are soft, flavorful, and perfect for any meal. With simple ingredients and easy steps, you’ll have fresh bread ready to enjoy with dinner or as a comforting snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ⅓ cups warm water
  • 1 packet instant dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or preferred oil
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 3 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 2 tablespoons melted salted butter

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water, instant dry yeast, granulated sugar, olive oil, salt, and all-purpose flour in the bowl of a stand mixer.
  2. Knead on low speed until combined, then increase to medium speed and knead until the dough forms a smooth and soft texture, about 6-8 minutes.
  3. Transfer the dough to an oiled bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, approximately 1 hour.
  4. Once risen, punch the dough down, place it on the counter, and divide it into 12 equal pieces.
  5. Shape each piece into a tight ball and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover them and allow to rise for another 30 minutes until puffy.
  6. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). In a small bowl, mix the egg with 1 tablespoon of water to create an egg wash and brush it over the dough.
  7. Score the top of each roll if desired, making ¼-inch deep slashes.
  8. Place the rolls in the oven and add a handful of ice cubes to the bottom to create steam. Bake for 18-20 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Remove the rolls from the oven, brush with melted salted butter, and serve warm.

Notes

For a golden crust, ensure to brush the rolls with egg wash before baking.
Adding ice cubes creates steam for a chewy crust, enhancing the texture.
