Description

This French Toast Casserole is a delightful blend of eggs, bread, and warm spices, offering an easy, flavorful meal. Perfect for brunch or a comforting breakfast, it’s topped with powdered sugar and maple syrup for that extra touch!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 18 ounces french or italian bread 1 loaf
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon divided
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar divided
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter divided
  • powdered sugar
  • maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Cut the bread into cubes and place in a large bowl.
  2. In another large bowl, whisk together eggs, vanilla, salt, ½ tablespoon of cinnamon, 1½ tablespoons of brown sugar, and milk.
  3. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes and mix well. TIP: Wearing gloves helps to distribute the mixture without breaking the cubes. Gently toss the bread in the mixture several times.
  4. Brush 1 tablespoon of melted butter on the bottom and sides of a baking dish. Add the bread mixture to the dish. Cover with plastic wrap and let it sit at room temperature for one hour, or refrigerate overnight.
  5. Preheat the oven to 400°F when ready to bake.
  6. Combine the remaining ½ tablespoon of cinnamon, 1½ tablespoons of brown sugar, and 1 tablespoon of melted butter. Sprinkle this mixture over the top of the casserole.
  7. Bake uncovered for 25 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the casserole to cool for 5-10 minutes before cutting and serving.

Notes

This casserole can be prepared the night before and baked in the morning for convenience.
Experiment with adding fruits like strawberries or blueberries for added flavor.
For a richer taste, substitute half of the milk with heavy cream.
