Description

This Homemade Hamburger Helper is a delightful twist on a classic favorite! With its rich flavors, simple ingredients like ground beef and macaroni, and quick prep, this dish makes a perfect comfort meal for families and busy weeknights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.25 lbs lean ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion or sweet onion diced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 medium garlic cloves minced
  • 3 cups low sodium beef broth or beef stock
  • 1 cups whole milk or half and half
  • 1/3 cup ketchup or chili sauce
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni
  • 2-3 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp seasoned salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp ground mustard
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley for garnishing optional

Instructions

  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium to medium-high heat and brown the ground beef with diced onion for about 7-9 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, then drain excess fat.
  • Stir in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, black pepper, chili powder, and ground mustard into the pan.
  • Add the beef broth, milk, ketchup, and dry elbow macaroni. Bring to a light boil while stirring continuously, then lower the heat to medium-low and cover the pan.
  • Simmer for about 12-15 minutes, or until the macaroni is cooked al dente and the sauce is beginning to thicken, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove the cover and stir in shredded cheddar cheese until it is fully melted.
  • Let the dish stand for 5 minutes before serving, optionally garnished with fresh parsley.

Notes

For a spicier kick, add more chili powder or some diced jalapeños.
Make sure to stir occasionally during simmering to prevent the macaroni from sticking.
Feel free to substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
