- 1 can (28-ounce) whole San Marzano tomatoes (do not drain)
- 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
- ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
- Add chopped onion and sauté until soft and translucent for about 5–7 minutes.
- Stir in minced garlic and sauté briefly until fragrant.
- Incorporate tomato paste and cook for another minute.
- Add whole San Marzano tomatoes, sugar, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper; simmer for 20-30 minutes.
- Adjust taste and texture as preferred, blending if a smoother consistency is desired.
