Description

This Irish Soda Bread features a delightful combination of buttermilk and flour, offering irresistible flavor with simple preparation. Ideal for quick dinners or healthy meals, this homemade bread is perfect for anyone looking for easy recipes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 4 1/4 cups flour
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 5 tbsp butter, cold & cubed

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and set aside a 10-12 inch cast iron skillet.
  2. Whisk the buttermilk and egg together, then set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt and whisk.
  4. Cut in the cold, cubed butter using a fork until the mixture resembles pea-sized crumbs.
  5. Add the buttermilk and egg mixture to the dry ingredients and mix gently until the dough is too stiff to stir.
  6. Transfer the crumbly dough onto a lightly floured countertop and shape it into a ball, then knead until the flour is moistened, adding more flour if necessary.
  7. Place the dough in the skillet and score the top with a sharp knife in an 'X' shape, about 1/2 inch deep.
  8. Bake for 45-55 minutes until golden brown and cooked through. If it browns too quickly, tent with aluminum foil.
  9. Cool the bread for 10 minutes in the skillet before transferring it to a wire rack.

Notes

Make sure the butter is very cold for the best texture in the bread.
If you don’t have buttermilk, you can create a substitute by mixing regular milk with a little vinegar.
Store leftovers wrapped in foil to keep the bread fresh.
